COMMUNITY SERVICE ======================================================= Note: The patch program is a guideline for the symbols that are presented on the patch. You can substitute other projects that represent these symbols. Each project does not need to be completed in specific order. The months noted are only suggested months to complete the projects. You can also have a community event and complete 3 projects in a day. Invite others to assist at your event. Example: Collect hats and mittens, food, and make shoeboxes for operation Christmas Child at your event. AUGUST or SEPTEMBER - (backpack) Collect school supplies for foster children, overseas children, schools, and local facilities that distribute them to the children in need. Other suggestions include: Creating a backpack of items to children going into foster care, teach children how to make an emergency ready kit with a backpack or collect backpacks for children. Other special projects to complete this month: Don’t forget to decorate a pinwheel and plant it on International Peace Day Click here for more information. OCTOBER - (Scarf/blanket) Collect winter items such as hats, scarves, mittens, socks, and coats for the less fortunate. Make sure they are gently worn coats. Donate them to the homeless, children, and other community facilities that give back to the community. Create blankets for soldiers, cancer patients, and much more. Other special projects to complete this month: Don’t forget to collect glasses for sight night on October 31. Free flyers available on line. NOVEMBER - (canned goods) Collect food to create Thanksgiving or holiday baskets. Have an event and ask each guest to bring an assigned non-persiable item. Other suggestions include: volunteering at a soup kitchen, preparing dishes for a retired living home, making cookies for neighbor, conducting a potluck for the battered wives shelter and much more. Other special projects to complete this month: Don’t forget to Participate in the Let Us Give Thanks Patch Program. Free leaf patterns for crafts are available on line. DECEMBER –(gift) Adopt a child during the holidays, mail a package overseas to support our troops, create a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child . Collect a shoebox of items for children all across the world that otherwise would not have a Christmas present. Other projects that you can participate on your own are adopt a troop, secret santa, toys for tots, or Angel Tree. JANUARY – (books) School supplies are starting to deplete after the first semester contact your school or local facilities to see if they are in need of backpacks, supplies or snacks. FEBRUARY– (card) Make cards or valentines for the soldiers overseas, hospitals or elderly homes. MARCH – (dog) Assist at an animal shelter, zoo, Humane Society, Adopt A pet, seeing eye dogs, animals in nursing homes, or learn about pet care. Collect items for the shelter or areas that need items for animals. APRIL- (flower pot)Create flowerpots for elderly homes. Assist children in a craft with planting or flowers. Participate in landscaping, flower gardens, planting flowers, gardening at schools or lodges. Complete an outdoor community service item. MAY– (box) Create a collection of any item that your community is in need of. This can be clothing, food, baby items, socks and much more. If they are going to be gifts then they would need to be new. Create baskets for Ronald McDonald house. JUNE- (toothbrush) Collect toiletries items for homeless shelters, battered wives shelters, Red Cross, camp counselors, etc. STAR - You are a star for helping others in your community. Choose a project that you enjoy. Examples: Share your gifts with others (such as language, art, science etc.); donate items to an orphanage; paint a mural in a shelter or community center; make decorations for a social event; offer to be a mother's helper or help the elderly. |
