Ellis Island

1. Ellis Island was actually two islands that was once a military outpost. The Main Building on Ellis Island is now a museum dedicated to the history of immigration. Who was the island named after? When was it acquired by the government and how much they buy it for? What states is it located near?

2. On January 1, 1892, the first building was created to welcome the immigrants into America. Where did the immigrants go prior to the Ellis Island building? Why did they move the immigrant station to Ellis Island? Who was the first immigrant to arrive at Ellis Island? How old was the person and what country did they come from?

3. On June 14, 1897, a fire on Ellis Island, burned the immigration station completely to the ground. In ensure that the next facility would be safe, on December 17, 1900 a red brick building was designed to hold the immigrants that were coming to America. What countries did immigrants primarily come from to live in America? How long did it take to go through the inspection process as long as all their papers were in order at Ellis Island? What percentage were sent back to their country?

4. Starting in 1984, Ellis Island underwent a major restoration, the largest historic restoration in U.S. history over $160,000,000 dollars. How did they fund this restoration and when did they open it to the public for visitors? How many visitors does it receive every year?

5. Today, when you visit the Ellis Island museum you will find a collection of items that were donated from the families of the immigrants who came to America long ago. View the artifacts or research a historical type of clothing, jewelry, musical instruments or furniture from this era of time.

6. Effective in 2001, there was a computer system installed in the Ellis Island building for investigating immigration history, family documentation, and genealogical exploration. What country are your ancestors from? Do you know when they came to America? For extra, research your family tree.

Liberty Island

7. Before it was called Liberty Island it was called Bedloe's Island. What was the island used for and who decided to use the island for the statue of Liberty? What states is it located near. For Extra, find out some other names the island has had.

8. Located on Liberty Island is the statue of Liberty. It weighs 250 ton and is 151 feet tall. How long did it take to create the statue? When was it completed? What country gave it to America as a gift? What does she hold in her left and right hand? How many steps to the top? What is the shape of the platform that is located on?

9. The Statue of Liberty celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28, 1986. This monument has grown to represent America's freedom. What other symbols does America have that represent the freedom of their country? Name two. For extra, you can draw the symbols, conduct a ceremony or walk in a parade.

10. When the statue of Liberty arrived in America it was not erected upright but arrived in 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates. How long did it take to put it together? What materials is it made of? For extra, color a picture of the statue of liberty, put together a puzzle, or visit the statue of Liberty.

11. Liberty Island not only encases the Statue of Liberty but is a twelve acre island that has over 400 planted trees. The trees have originated from Europe, Norway, London, and Asian origin. Find out the five major tree types that are planted on the island. Which ones have blossoms and which do not? For extra draw a picture of a tree or go on a nature hike.
