1. The Florida peninsula was named by a Spanish Explorer. Find out who discovered Florida. What had he really been looking for? What is a peninsula? Locate Florida on a United States map. Locate its capital. Identify the state bird, flag and flower.

2. Enjoy an afternoon by the sea or escape in a book about the seashore or ocean life. Learn more about the ocean, animals and plants that live there. For extra credit, you can create seashell art or a collage of ocean life.

3. Learn about some of the famous people from Florida or someone important to its history. Why were they important? What did they accomplish? Some examples are: John Gorrie, John Ringling, Osceola, Lue Gim Gong, Mary Meleod Bethune or Ernest Hemmingway.

4. Half of Florida is covered in forests. It also has swamps, marshes, and everglades. Discover some of the different terrains and the animals and plants that live in these terrains.

5. St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States. Learn more about it or another historical site in Florida. Some examples are: Thomas Edison Home, Yulee Sugar Mill, Cape Florida Light House or China Splendid.

6. Cape Canaveral was the site of the first rocket testing station in America. In 1961, the United States made the decision to send men to the Moon. When was the first landing on the moon? Who was the first astronaut to land on the moon? Learn more about space and the moon. For extra credit, draw a picture of yourself on the moon or space.

7. Florida is known for its many amusement or theme parks. Many of these parks help you experience and enhance your knowledge of music, culture, animation, moviemaking, physics, marine life and art. Learn more about one of these subjects or visit a theme park.

8. In 1819, the United States obtained Florida by a treaty with Spain. Where did most of the early settlers come from? What jobs were available? Learn about the crops they grew? What type of clothing did they wear? What is a conch house? Do one of the following: Complete a craft or art project, try your hand at an 18th century game or, draw a picture depicting the clothing, housing or jobs of this era.

9. Experience the jubilee of festivals in Florida. Some the more exciting places to visit and explore are: The Renaissance Fair, Days in Spain, Jazz Festivals and Seafood Festival.

10. The First Christmas was celebrated in Florida. What was a “goodie string?” Create a gift or craft of your own and give it to someone or have a potluck dinner. Some examples of crafts are homemade cards or fruit baskets.

11. Try a taste of the traditional foods found in Florida. Some examples are: Fried conch, key lime pie, hushpuppies, oranges, fruit salad, or clam chowder. Try a food for fun.

12. There were five main Native American tribes that once occupied Florida. Pick a tribe to learn about. Design your own Tribal logo and personal name. Find out what type of housing they lived in. Create a craft depicting your tribe.

13. Florida has many different wildflowers and native flowers. Identify the parts of a flower. Research or find at least three other flowers that are native to Florida. This can be accomplished by using the internet or books.

 

This patch program will help its participants learn more about the history and sites in this state. If you have the privilege of visiting this state, you can complete some of these requirements there. It would be helpful to learn more about the state prior to your visit. Use the library and the internet to research more.
