1. The Netherlands is often called Holland, but this name only applies to a portion of the country. It is located on the continent of Europe. Locate The Netherlands on a map. What is the capital city? What countries surround it?

2. People that reside in The Netherlands are called Dutch. Their official language is Dutch. Learn how to count to ten in Dutch or recite simple phrases and words.

3. For over 600 years the Dutch have used windmills to drain their land of water deposits, grind grain, and other small tasks. Learn more about a windmill in The Netherlands, OR visit a windmill in your area OR learn how a windmill works. For extra, create an art project depicting a windmill.

4. Long ago over two-fifths of The Netherlands was in swamps or under the ocean. The Dutch drained the areas and they are now called polders. Learn more about the terrain area and the type of outdoor activities that are conducted there. Examples include: sand plains, uplands, dunes, and polders.

5. In 1593. the first tulip was planted in The Netherlands. Today, people come from all over the world to see them ion the spring. Learn more about plants and animals that live in The Netherlands OR research more about the tulips and view pictures of the wonderful gardens. Examples: blackface sheep, crested ducks, purple heron, cattle egret, and the sand lizard.

6. More than 2,000 years ago the Romans conquered The Netherlands. Today a king and queen rule over the country. Learn what their flag looks like and the monetary unit they use.

7. Since the Middle Ages The Netherlands have produced cheese. Today it is delivered around the world. Learn more about the foods served in The Netherlands. Try a food from a restaurant or grocery store or make a dish from the recipes included in the manual. Examples: oliebollen (doughnuts), frikandel (fried sausage), cheese, potatoes and cheese.

8. There are a variety of holidays and festivals in The Netherlands. Some examples include: Christmas, Queen’s Birthday, Whitsuntide, Easter, Lazybones Day, and Ascension Day. Have your own celebration representing one of these holidays events and learn the meaning of the event or attend a festive Dutch event. You may also create a drawing, art project, or prepare a food served at the event.

9. Traditional clothing in The Netherlands is mainly worn for dances or special occasions. Traditional clothing for women included bonnets, colorful dresses, and wooden shoes. Men wore dark pants and baggy shirts with wooden shoes. Though some farmers still wear wooden shoes to keep their feet dry. Draw a picture, wear clothing, decorate a paper wooden shoe, or create the paper doll in The Netherlands manual.

10. The Netherlands's monuments, buildings, and architecture reflects their rich heritage and historic background. They have castles, museums, and much more to explore. In addition, you may wish to create an artistic design of your own. Examples of artists include Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Van Gogh, and Johannes Vermeer.

14. Dutch children enjoy a variety of traditional games. Learn about games or toys played OR play a game from The Netherlands. Examples include: Crazy Eights, Hearts, jump rope, marbles, tag, checkers, and hopscotch.
