FUN PATCH PROGRAM Complete
one requirement to earn this patch 1. Which date is the official start of fall or autumn? How did fall get its name? What are normal fall temperatures for your area? Talk about another area, how is there season different. Discuss food items that are harvested during this time period. For extra credit: Create a collage or a list of food items OR create a yummy treat to share with others. Examples are tasty apple turnovers, pumpkin cookies or another recipe using fall foods. 2. Did you know there are a variety of holidays or events celebrated in the United States during the fall? Explore a publicly celebrated festival. Find out what day it is celebrated and create an activity to represent the event. National Caramel Apple, Chocolate or Candy Corn Day, Rainforest week, American Education Week, Children's Day of India, Alaska or Germany or National Dinosaur Month. 3. Animals migrate (move) all around the world…over both land and sea. Find out which animals migrate in the fall and why. Examples: Zebras try to avoid the rainy season and turtles travel so as to lay their eggs on the beaches where they were born. For extra credit: Play animal charades. 4. Many holidays are celebrated all around the world during the fall. Find out more about one of these holidays. When is it celebrated and why? Some examples are Raksha Bandhan, Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, Saint Martins Day, Chung Yeung Festival and Trung Thu. 5. Bring the fall into your home. Create an art project depicting the fall theme of your area. Create a scarecrow, cornucopia, carve a pumpkin, create leaf rubbings, and create a painting or a drawing depicting a fall theme. 6. Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1621. What are some of the other items brought to the feast? Did you know one such item was popcorn? Do we still serve any of these items today? What was the reason for the first Thanksgiving feast? Who were the attendees? Thanksgiving was not celebrated annually until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln declared it a National holiday. Tell someone what you are thankful for. For extra credit: Create a festive Thanksgiving craft or food (such as paper wreathes greeting cards, place mats, pumpkin pie, or cranberry bread). 7.Take a local field trip or just adventure into your backyard and enjoy the outdoors of the fall season. Some examples include: Visiting a pumpkin patch or apple orchard, a hayride, camping, horseback riding, canoeing, visiting a corn maze, or gardening. 8. Participate in a fall festival or create one of your own. Some fun activities include: Pumpkin rolling contest, square dancing, masquerade balls, contest or costume competitions, bake-offs, fall flings, bobbing for apples, or patriotic themes. 9. Why do leaves change colors? Which types of trees lose their leaves? What are those trees names and what do their leaves look like? Which types of animals live in the trees and why does a tree need its leaves? For extra credit: Make a display of leaves, a picture of animals that live in the forest or take a nature hike. |
