A co-emergence like this of two specific broods with different life cycles happens only once every 221 years. The last time these two groups emerged together was in 1803.

Both the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII are periodical cicadas, which emerge every 13 or 17 years across North America.

Brood XIX will emerge in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Brood XIII will emerge in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin, as well as a small area of Indiana and potentially southwestern Michigan along the Indiana border.

Illinois is the only state where there’s potential for broods XIX and XIII to overlap and intermingle. Coverage will vary greatly from state to state.

Cicadas are harmless. They don't bite or sting. Lawnmowers, power tools and other loud items attract cicadas.
